The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program (MS-SLP) focuses on training speech-language pathologists to provide a full range of services to communicatively disordered clients in a variety of settings. The program provides scientifically-based academic and clinical curricula to foster critical thinking and application of best practices. Course content is research-based and prepares the student to meet the requirement for the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). WHO SHOULD APPLY? Individuals with a bachelor’s degree who are interested in obtaining a master’s degree in the field of speech-language pathology Completed admission application packet, including nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University Official transcripts indicating conferral of a bachelor’s or graduate degree by a regionally accredited institution (minimum 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average [CGPA] required) Official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions Two written essays (see forms in application packet) Three letters of recommendation by three different individuals (e.g., instructors, supervisors, etc.) who can attest to the applicant’s ability to succeed in a master’s degree program (see forms in application packet) Application interview (for qualifying applicants) Once admitted, all students must successfully complete a mandatory orientation FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS Applicants whose native language is not English may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International students living in the United States must present verification of student visa or residency status. Due to the limited availability of ASHA-certified supervisors, students who live outside of the United States are not eligible for admission to the MS-SLP. Furthermore, students accepted to the MS-SLP program cannot relocate outside of the United States before the completion of the degree. This course is an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vocal mechanisms. The Structure and function of the skeletal, neurological, and muscular systems involved in respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, and audition are reviewed. The normal anatomy and functioning of these systems is contrasted with disordered or damaged systems. This course provides an overview of treatment strategies and professional terminology used in the management of communication disorders. There is a rudimentary focus on various intervention approaches for populations ranging from childhood to adult. Basic information is delivered on the Code of Ethics from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. This course provides students with an opportunity to develop clinically relevant research skills and gain hands-on experiences with research practices. Students work collaboratively with selected faculty members to plan and conduct research projects. The scope and depth of the project varies according to the number of credits for which the course is taken. Students must secure faculty permission in advance of registering for this course. Special Topics (1-3 credits) Advanced study of selected theoretical, clinical, or professional issues in speech pathology and audiology (elective may be taken for credit, CEU, or recertification). Prerequisite/s: None Organization and Management of School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Programs (3 credits) This course will address the challenges facing school-based speech-language pathologists. Topics will include: legislative mandates; current issues in education and the impact of these issues on the traditional roles of school-based speech-language pathologists; organization and management of school speech-language programs; active participation on the educational team; service delivery models for diverse populations; use of technology in schools; treatment outcomes and accountability measures; marketing services in the schools and the community; creative program ideas. Prerequisite/s: SLP 6000, SLP 6011, and SLP 6060 School externship requires a full time placement (minimum of 32 hours/week for a 14 week semester) in a school setting with which NSU has a current legal affiliation. The school externship must be taken by candidates seeking Department of Education certification in speech-language pathology (SLP). Candidates will participate in all activities associated with a school-based SLP position including assessment and treatment of students in a PK-12 school setting. Candidates will be supervised by school-based clinical faculty (SLP) who are ASHA certified and state licensed and by a University supervisor (site visitor). Coursework in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program (MS-SLP) is available on the main campus and at NSU's regional campuses throughout the state of Florida for students who live within a one-hour’s driving distance. Online course delivery is offered to all other students throughout the United States. Coursework is offered in the evenings or on weekends through face-to face, videoconferencing, online, and hybrid (face-to-face and online) deliveries, which affords students the opportunity to complete the academic portion of the MS-SLP while maintaining employment. Equivalent prerequisite courses will be accepted as part of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree coursework if the applicant earned a grade of B (Quality Grade Points [QGP] of 3.0) or higher in each course. Prerequisite courses will only be accepted if completed within the past 10 years of the date of application to the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program (MS-SLP). If the applicant did not complete the prerequisites as part of the undergraduate program, courses may be taken as post-baccalaureate work. Clinical labs and externships are practical applications included in the speech-language pathology major. These applied experiences are the final steps in the completion of the program and include placements in three clinical settings, affording students the opportunity to work with diverse clients across the lifespan. Candidates must complete a minimum of 400 supervised clinical contact hours before graduation. The program in Fort Lauderdale offers a state of the art communication disorders clinic for student practicum experience and as a resource for the community. Specialty clinics in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and voice disorders as well as services for all communication disorders are available for children and adults. Tuition: Tuition for the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology for the 2015-2016 School Year is $1195.00 (one thousand, one hundred and ninety-five dollars) per credit hour , Fees Application Fee: A onetime, nonrefundable fee of $50 must accompany the application for admission. Registration Fee: $30 per term Liability Insurance: $10 per term Student Services Fee: $250 per term Program Late Charge: $100 per late registration, the university may also assign a late fee Lab Fee: Students enrolling in clinical classes (SLP 6005, 6015, 6101, 6102, 6110, 6120, and 6103) pay a $200 fee per lab class. SLP 6055 Dyphagia includes lab fee of $100. Out-of-State Externship Fee: $750 for each clinical lab experience and each externship (over and above tuition and lab fee). This fee applies to externship assignments within the continental United States. Out-of-Tri-County-Area Clinic Lab and Externship Fees: $200 over and above tuition and lab fees. Degree Application Fee: A Nova Southeastern University degree application fee of $75 must be paid before clearance for graduation can be granted. The Nova Southeastern University Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program (MS-SLP) has been awarded accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Students enrolled in a program that is accredited by CAA are eligible to apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Should a student enrolled in the MS-SLP wish to file a grievance against the program, the following conditions must be met: Grievances must be against an accredited educational program, or program in candidacy status in speech-language pathology and/or audiology Grievances must related to the standards for accreditation of educational programs in audiology and speech-language pathology Grievances must include verification, if the complaint is from a student or faculty/instructional staff member, that the complainant exhausted all institutional grievances and review mechanisms before submitting a complaint to the CAA All grievances must be signed and submitted in writing to: Chair, Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology American Speech-Language-Hearing Association 2200 Research Boulevard Rockville, MD 20850-3289 Complaints will not be accepted by e-mail or facsimile. The complaint must clearly describe the specific nature of the complaint and the relationship of the complaint to the accreditation standards. Supporting data for the charge must be provided. The complainant’s burden of proof is a preponderance or greater weight of the evidence. In order for a student to receive transfer credit, courses taken previously must be equivalent to those described in the catalog. Approval of transfer credit will be granted only after the student has met with the program director or his/her designee. The student must provide catalog course descriptions and may be required to provide course syllabi. Final decisions regarding transfer credit will be made in conjunction with the faculty member responsible for the subject matter to which the transfer applies. Only courses completed at regionally accredited universities and colleges, or their foreign equivalents, and ASHA-accredited programs on the graduate level, will be considered for transfer credit into the master’s program. No more than nine semester hours of credit may be transferred into the MS-SLP. In order to be considered for transfer credit, a grade of B or better must have been recorded for each course. Transfer credits must have been earned within five years prior to a student’s admission to the MS-SLP. Credits earned beyond the time limit may be considered for transfer at the discretion of course instructors. An examination may be required. Students enrolled in the MS-SLP who wish to take a course at another university must have prior approval by either the program director, or his/her designee. Courses must be taken at a CAA–accredited program for the transfer credit to be accepted toward Nova Southeastern University’s degree. Credits earned at Nova Southeastern University are transferable only at the discretion of the receiving school. Students who wish to transfer credit are advised to contact the admissions office of the receiving school for information. Students holding a master’s degree in audiology who are seeking a master’s in speech-language pathology for dual licensure or certification may exceed the maximum number of transfer credits upon approval by the program.
